Why does Oklahoma have it's panhandle?

That's just how it turned out. As the last state of the lower 48 to join the Union, Oklahoma ended up consisting of "leftover" territory from organizing the surrounding states. The Panhandle itself was a leftover from organizing Texas, Colorado, and Kansas.
