any ideas on what he may need , that the family could get him ? i am having a going away party, and several people have mentioned ...does he need anything... and i really dont know!

He won't be able to carry that much with him, but after he gets there he'll need regular packages. He might like a draft stopper to keep dust from coming in under the door of his tent; white athletic socks to cover weapons and equipment; baby wipes; magazines; batteries; chap stick and visine; individually-packaged snack foods that won't melt in the heat; boxes of ziploc bags; homemade jerky if you know someone with a dehydrator; a cooling bandanna in desert camo material. Instant coffee and nondairy creamer even if he doesn't drink it. Give him a big hug for all of us!

There is really very little besides the standard issue stuff that he will be able to tale with him. You can send a few more things to him once he gets there.
As far as fun things he can take, a laptop is pretty necessary and a good, small digital camera with a lot of memory. All sensitive items like electronics and Cd's need to be encased in something that keeps out sand. Sand is everywhere, no matter what their living quarters.
A "Camel-back" and drive-on rags and Wiley-X sunglasses are also good to take.
When he gets there, he can tell you what else he might need.

Even though the military supplies the basic-needs. He could always do with extra underwear and socks; nicer toiletries such as his favourite razor and shaving creme, after-shave, deodorant, battery-powered toothbrush (with batteries).
Pictures of family and friends close-at-hand. Books he may like to read.

make him a little supply baggie of every thing he likes/loves... pictures, something that will give him inspiration.
