The game was called Senet.
To play it you required two players.The board was 10X3 squares in an oblong shape.The squares represented numbers in this direction of play.

Usually the game-board was the top of a box like small chest
with a drawer below to hold the playing pieces.
There were 10 playing pieces,consisting of 5 spools and 5 cones,4counting sticks,plain on one side and decorated on the other.
All of the playing pieces would be arranged alternately(cone-spool-cone etc.) along the board from 1 to 10.
Each player then threw the counting sticks to determine his move.
1 uncoloured side up =1
2 uncoloured sides up =2
3 uncoloured sides up =3
4 uncoloured sides up=4
All coloured sides up =5
The player who threw a 1 went first.
The rules and method of play are very extensive covering 4 A4
pages of my notes but if you would like them I would be happy to copy them and email them to you.
There is an element of draughts or chess in it,but luck was also a determining factor as to who was the winner
The ultimate object of the game was to be the first to clear all your own pieces from the board first. it involves a significant amount of strategy.
The game was popular from the Middle Kingdom until after Roman occupation.
Which is around 2.500 yrs.

I am trying to do the same crossword, I know the answer is NOT Senet because it answered a diff. question on, a board game played with counters and throw sticks.
So I still need the answer also, plus, fugures tucked in between the mummy s layers of wrappings.
