Newspapers and tabloids get their stories either from their own reporters or news and photo services. There is usually a subscription fee from the services. That is why you often see the little credit along with a story, (AP) (CNN) etc.

Almost all information on the internet is copyrighted in some way or another. Do not use anything you find without permission. You may quote stories and sites for certain purposes but not the whole thing. Post a link if you want people to see the whole thing. Most web sites post a little instruction on how to contact them to ask permissions. Some say go ahead and use certain items as long as they get credit.

A good rule is never use anyone else's work without permission and / or credit. Some folks take a dim view of others making money from their work and will make life hard for them.

The news has a group (an organasation) that takes the pictures, and each paper has to fund it. So they can get pictures from them, and use that to wright their stories. I bet they could get away with printing off of the internet, but it would be a risk.

It's up to the author of. They can choose to allow people to use it freely, or copyright them.
