I am American but I am considering pursuing a medical degree in Italy. I would like to know how a medical degree from a non-American university would be viewed in the US in terms of finding employment or opening a practice.

You will need to take the USMLE exams (United States Medical Licensing Examination). Once you pass these tests, then you will be able to practice medicine in the United States. In order to apply for USMLE testing, certain requirements need to be met including approval of the medical school where you are obtaining your degree. Good Luck! :)

Yep, I used to go to a doctor that got his degree from the University of Guadalajara in Mexico. I might have avoided him if I had known that before hand, but he turned out to be a pretty good doc.

There are tons of doctors here in San Diego where I live that got degrees from the same school, and also a lot got their doctorates from Universities in India as well.

I would guess it would depend on the reputation of the school itself. Apparently Univ. of Guadalajara in Mexico is a well respected medical school, who would have known.
