If you follow a religion, then you believe in God. If you believe in God then you also believe that he knows much more than what we can ever possibly be aware of. Things such as invisible blessings, destiny etc. There is always cause and effect. We can never truly be fully aware of the totality of our actions and their effects, whether it is in the near or distant future. But God is aware of the bigger picture.
For example lets take a theoretical scenario. Say someone is killed...who is to know what their future held...could it be possible that something worse was ahead of him or her? (A debate able question no doubt, which i don't have the answers to). But as a believer, you can only have faith. Others would argue that to be a human trait for survival. Call it what you will but Religon, God and faith go hand in hand.
We are all interlinked somehow in this cause and effect. The life of one person constantly effects the life of another, in minor or major ways...similar to the domino's effect, for example. We really don't know the bigger picture.
Consider this... we are constantly learning about ourselves throughout our lives and know only about exsistence through our eyes and being. Religion teaches us that God is aware of everything. 'Does God command it because he is right? or is it right because God commands it?' This would be one and the same...that is...If you have faith and believe in God.
There is a great book that i would recommend, it is called 'When you hear hoofbeats think of a Zebra' by Shems Friedlander.
(This is a philosophical answer by a believer)

Neither. God commands it because he does.
People should not assume that what God does is 'Right'. And what He commands might be very unpleasant for people. If you look at the Christian concept of Hell, some people might consider that right, but I guarantee others do not. So God commands things for his own reason.
If I have to pick one or the other, I guess I'd say it is right because God commands it, but that seems deceptively simple.

I don't think God does command.
I think some people and religions have misinterpreted the teachings.
I don't think it was ever intended to justify killing and murder as right.
My understanding is that God is Love.
But if you do unto others as you would be done by, that is exactly what you will get returned.
So Love Thy neighbour and perhaps that too will be returned.
Good luck all in a good healthy understanding of what is right.

Yes, I agree with war. One of the problems that should be identified first is to see how terms like `faith', `god', or `prayer' mean, because different cultures have very different things. Therefore the answer will vary according to their beliefs. There is no wrong answer. For myself, I would say: " God commands it because it is right." Because I personally believe that God is righteous and just.

Whatsoever God commands, the same is truly right and justified.
If God commanded someone to be killed, it would not be murder, since murder implies illegality and true laws are divine in origin.

Depends on one's belief in God. God commands it because it is right. He wouldn't command it if it were wrong...or would He?

Depends whether you believe in God in the first place. The answer could be both depending on what was commanded.

"Philosophy class" and "right answer" are mutually exclusive.
That's the whole point of philosophy - there is no "right answer," only different sets of assumptions and processes for looking at the way we look at the world.
God (if there is a God) commands (if God commands) because God can. Whether it is right is the choice that those who hear the command (if there is one, and if anyone does) must make for themselves.

It is right because GOD commands it. God's word is true, God does not make mistakes, GOD is perfect, so if God says it , then it is true, good and right.
