There are 100 KB in a 100 K file.

"what's the best way to reduce a photo file size?"

There are several options, different image formats at different qualities will produce different sizes. Experiment with the JPEG and PNG file formats and see if you can get better results. Also, decreasing the size of the images will reduce file sizes.

Depending on what image format and compression format you choose, you will get different mileage. JPEGs don't tend to zip well because a JPEG is typically already compressed.

Two things will reduce the file size: resolution and picture size. To conserve space, set the resolution (pixels per inch) as low as you can tolerate, and reduce the picture size to the one you need.

Keep in mind, you should save the original, because once you reduce the resolution in the new copy, you cannot restore it.

????
The answer is in the question. 100.

And as for your second question... your camera has probably saved the photo as a jpeg, which is already a compressed format. You won't get much recompressing it.
