You can get pregnant immediately after giving birth, although it may not be the best idea. Let your body heal for at least a few months. And most doctors recommend 6 weeks before resuming sex, but as long as you have your doc's okay, go for it.

You can start having sex again when you feel comfortable and your bleeding has stopped. Most doctors say about 6 weeks.
If you are breast feeding you may not be able to concieve right away but then again, some people do so don't use breast feeding as birth control when you are trying not to get pregnant.
According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published in the February 25, 1999, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the recommended interval between pregnancies is 18 to 23 months. Those who became pregnant within six months of giving birth had a 30 to 40 percent greater chance of delivering a premature baby or a child small in size. The risks also increased significantly for mothers who waited 10 years. These women were twice as likely to have undersized babies and had a 50 percent greater chance of delivering prematurely. The study examined 173,205 births in Utah from 1989 to 1996, with the majority of mothers being white. The results may not be the same for minorities or for high-risk pregnancies. A second study to account for this deficiency is currently underway. ( http://www.babyzone.com/preconception/family_planning/a268 )

Sex -- You should wait until your bleeding has stopped, and until your vaginal area is completely healed. For most people, that is at least 3 weeks.
Another baby -- Medically speaking, it is advisable to wait a year before getting pregnant again. This gives your body a chance to recover completely. Of course, everyone is a little different. But even if you feel fine, you may not be totally back to normal. At least wait until you have a few periods that are regular, with a normal amount of flow.
There is an increased risk of preterm and low birth weight babies, when spaced too closesly.
Also, if you get pregnant before losing your "baby weight," it will be even harder to lose it.
There is an increased risk of some very serious brain and spinal cord problems too, and here's why. Folic Acid (folate) is one important vitamin that is often depleted in pregnancy, and a deficiency can cause brain and spinal cord defects in the fetus. For that reason, you should take folic acid (400 mcg) daily for at least a few months before becoming pregnant again.

It is safe to have sex when your body feels comfortable with it. Usually after 3 or 4 weeks if there was no tearing. Also the first few months after delivery or miscarriage are the most fertile times of your life. I got pregnant when my son was 3 months old and with all the complications it caused I would urge you to wait. Pregnancies that close can take a huge toll on your body and your relationship.

It's possible to get pregnant anytime you have sex, even if you just had a baby - so have SAFE SEX until you're ready to conceive.
As for what's good for your body, some recommend waiting to conceive again until your baby is around a year old. The theory is that it takes about as much time for your body to recover from pregnancy and delivery as it took your body to BE pregnant and deliver.
Oh, as for the "you won't get preggers while breastfeeding" thing - WRONG!!!! It might be a little more difficult for some women to conceive while nursing, but it's still possible - please don't rely on breastfeeding as a means of birth control!
Good luck!

Doctors usually recommend waiting six weeks before having sex after giving birth, and they recommend waiting about a year before getting pregnant. Your body needs time to heal. However, many people do not wait a year before getting pregnant, and they have healthy babies with no problems.

It is best to wait 6 weeks to allow your body to heal after giving birth. As far as conceiving, I personally don't know of any kids that are less than 12 months apart...but I'm sure it is possible to be less. And don't believe anyone that tells you it is impossible to get pregnant while breastfeeding...tell that to my mother in law who has 2 sons who are 13 months apart! Good luck!! Sending baby dust your way...
