nothing powers up, the monitor, no noise.. even pressing the power for 20secs has no effect. the modem just shows: PWR, D/S flicker, and one other (at the right end, can't rem!) . The USB light doesnt show up like it would normally

If your PC doesn't turn on then it's either your power supply in your PC at fault or the fuse in your plug has blown.
your hard drive contains your operating system, your PC will still start even if there is a fault with that but there will be no windows (operating system)
If your monitor doesn't show anything on it but does power up then your PC power supply is at fault or worse your video card is broken.
Please be more specific with details.

Well if your PC isn't turning on, not even a light, you'v probably blown your Power supply in the machine. Or maybe a fuse somewhere between your pc and the national pwer grid.
PS having loads of USB attachments running at once tends to strain a Power supply
Else if your machine turns on but your hd isnt working its probably a jumper setting on the drive or a broken connection/damaged cable.
Don't know why you say anything about your broadband connection.
And without more info your not gonna get much help sorry.
Ok unless your monitor is connected to the computer for power which i havent seen in a quite a few years then its got to be the wall sockets your plugging both your monitor and PC into or possibly if your have an exstension cable which you plug them both into it may have power surge protection and it could be a fuse in that.

1] Try something else in the wall socket.
2] Check the fuse in the plug.
If that doesn't turn up a problem & the power cable's plugged in okay, the next suspect is the power supply in the case.

Hibernate is greater helpful. Standby incredibly would not save lots. you may regulate the properties interior the flexibility section. I particularly have mine set so as that pushing the flexibility button sends the laptop into hibernate. I push the sleep button on my keyboard if i'm in simple terms stepping away for a couple of minutes...that way i'm password secure on an identical time particularly of in simple terms locking the laptop. Will it injury the laptop or difficultcontinual? in all risk no longer at as quickly as. although, particular applications are programmed to run on startup. occasion: I particularly have AVG anti-virus, and it updates the definitions after initiate-up. Standby or Hibernate do no longer change in this option...it must be a boot. So, approximately another day or so, I ability my laptop all the way down to verify i'm getting the virus updates. ought to I try this from interior the AVG administration panel? particular...even though it particularly is greater artwork!! i might close it down thoroughly a minimum of as quickly as a week, just to verify all the Window applications see a sparkling boot each so often.

If all the cables (inside the case) are connected and u can't see any lights or activity, then i think is the Power Supply.
Is quite easy to replace, just make sure the new power supply has the same watts than the old one.
The p.supply is connected to lots of parts on the motherboard, it may be wise to take a picture of the old one to have a reference.
hope it helps

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK
Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:
Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.
Then begin by;
delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.
goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions
goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.
Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.
Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.
Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.
Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.
Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:
dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories
Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

firstly tell me if your PC is turned on. if yes, there is an IP Config problem. your ISP must have given you values to enter into the TCPIP option on your network setting.
kindly specify your question so that i can answer it better.
