I generally think that Congressmen and Senators be should be fairly well paid - so that people who don't have a lot of money will have an incentive to run for and stay in congress- Additionally, reasonably good pay may serve as an incentive for them not to take bribes.

On the other hand there should be a way to align their fortunes with those of the people - Of course they should pay into Social Security - and if Social Security benefits are cut, their pension benefits should be cut at the same rate. I would like to find a way to punish them for borrowing and spending all the money in the Social Security Trust fund with no plan in place to pay it back when it is needed to pay benefits, but I can't see any way it will happen.

Yes they should. If they paid into and retired on social security you can bet they would fix the system that we pay for. How can they fix the problems of the average person when they don't even understand the problem?
A politician that doesn't get reelected for a second term is basically being fired by the citizens (their bosses) so why should they collect a pension? If I get fired from my job I am not allowed to draw a pension.

Every congress person alive today should have their pensions and personal wealth confiscated to repay the money stolen from the Social Security fund that was added to the general fund!

you're misinformed. Congressmen pay into SS purely like each and every person else does. additionally they are section of the federal worker retirement device. They get the best comparable retirement advantages another Federal worker receives. they do no longer draw their earnings for the remainder of their life. they could desire to be vested of their pension , purely like each and every person else. they could desire to serve 25 years in workplace, to start amassing their pension right now after retirement. Or they could desire to attend until eventually they are fifty 5 years previous, to start amassing. Their pension is predicated on the form of years served, the place somebody who served 30 years in Congress, could obtain 80% of thier earnings at retirement. somebody who served 6 years, could get around 10% at age fifty 5.

I do. And I think we should all get the same retirement. Either we get theirs or they get ours. I hate that they think they are the ruling elite.
