Adversity is just that. It's a situation which is not favourable, so why should a period of adversity be beneficial as a rule? Look at it this way - an optimist says the glass is half full, whereas the pessimist says it is half empty. Both are wrong. The glass simply has twice the volume it requires. Once you can accept the notion of the rough and the smooth, and not expect to gain or lose in the long term from either one of them as a matter of course, you're on the way to being a far happier person. Anybody who says different needs to go somewhere quiet and away from people, and write sickly-sweet / darkly-gothic poetry until they've got it out of their systems. Once they're slightly better adjusted they may rejoin the rest of society.

Some adversity is so adverse (sorry, couldn't resist) that you can't get over it. It wears you down and sucks your vitality. Some things you simply can't benefit from, for whatever reason. For example, I have chronic tinnitus, which is ringing in the ears. It's a sort of adversity, and it doesn't benefit me in anyway. It's not unbearable, but it doesn't make me a better person.

Some adversity, like chronic severe pain, can lead to additional adversity...like chronic depression. Pain makes the depression worse. Depression makes the pain worse. I person can go completely insane.
