Many mammals will raise their hair/fur when it is cold, so a layer of warm air is trapped next to the skin. We don't have much hair but the same principle applies; each hair has a little muscle called the arrectores pilorum muscle (involuntary) which raises the hair. In cold weather this doesn't really do humans much good, unless they are extremely hairy. The main result for us is that we get 'goose pimples'.

Goose pimples are the hair folicles on your body standing up so as to catch a thin film of air near to your skin and thus keep it and you warm. Similar to the effect of a wet suit.

Blood goes to central core to protect vital organs plus goose pimple is always around base of hair which swells up to trap hair/warm air

the hairs on your arms for example stand up to be able to trap air within them. This works as insulation and would have been better when we were less evolved and in other mammals with more hair....more hairs, more air can be trapped and better insulation.

The goose pimples are the bumps formed by the hair follicles when the hair position changes

We get goose pimples because it raises the tiny hairs on our skin which then trap heat and keep us warmer.

It's our body's way of making us warm up. If you notice, each goose pimple is around the base of a hair. By swelling up each hair follicle like that it makes all your hairs stand on end and they trap a layer of air around the body to warm it up to body tempurature and keep it there.
