In fact you can gold plate everything. Even wood, plastic and the human body. Never seen Goldfinger?
There are countless techniques to apply a gold layer to an object. It is possible to use galvanization (with electricity), boiling (gold solved in an acid) or, the easiest one, leaf gold. This sticks to skin perfectly.
Only liquids or gasses can't be gold plated but you can dissolve gold in certain liquids.

God didn't write anything. Reformed Egyptian is only Hebrew written with Egyptian characters. When Mormon gave the plates to his son, Moroni, they were both very much alive and in solid bodies. Moroni showed Joseph Smith where they were. God gave Moses the Urim and Thummim, which is like special glasses. Prof. Anthone did certify that the characters were real and the translation good until he found out that Joseph Smith was shown the plates' location by an angel. Then he ripped it up. Oh, and you mention Prof. Howe? Who is he, what is his full name? No one has ever exposed Joseph Smith as a fraud. The Smithsonian merely said that they never used the Book of Mormon as a scientific tool, like for archaeological purposes. They never said anything about it being untrue, especially Biblically. The Elders of our church don't want the plates, because evil men would try to steal them. God has them and that's good enough for us. If it's not enough for you, that's your problem, not ours. WE don' t need absolute proof to have faith. There were eleven other people who saw the plates, and testified that fact. NONE of them, even those who left the church, EVER recanted their testimony of seeing hte plates. You also said "...it is belived smith got the idea for the plate story from....". Believed by whom? The Book of Mormon could be fiction, but you have never even read it, so how can you even think of critiquing it? Why don't you actually sit down and READ IT? Prayerfully and carefully, read it all. Ponder the message, and pray about it.

I have seen advertisements for a company that will gold plate your child's` first pair of shoes( when the child has finished with them !) The shoes would be made from either leather, plastic or fabric, so presumably these materials would have to be chemically treated before being gold plated.

You can gold plate chrome, nickel, zinc, aluminum, stainless steel, copper. But when you gold plate materials with "silver qualities" they tend to "bleed through" and wear off, sometimes this takes many many years depending on the thickness of the gold plating. Good Luck with everything.
