hi, my names tamika and i just had my baby 5 weeks ago. a healthy beautiful baby boy. I had the same craving and ate smoked salmon all the way through my pregnancy and my baby turned out better than fine. you think about back in the earlier days when there was none of these "food warnings". the babies were fine and they actually had less food allergies than todays babies. I say eat what you normally eat and you and bubby will be fine. good luck to u and your lil one. xxx

Yes, smoked salmon is safe to eat during your pregnancy. It has been said to avoid certain types of fish while pregnant but that doesn't include salmon. The fish that you should eat in moderation would be tuna especially albacore tuna. The tuna contains high amounts of mercury so you should watch the amounts of tuna that you eat but not salmon. It is said that Salmon is one of the most safest fish you can eat during pregnancy. Salmon and shrimp. Take care and eat the Salmon now w/out worry.

Enjoy your salmon. The main foods to avoid are unpasteurised dairy products, soft cooked eggs and liver or liver pate.
Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and I am sure a craving for smoked salmon can only be a good thing - I craved grapefruit and vegetable spring rolls during my second one and chocolate hazelnut spread during my third (not so good and very fattening!)

I am a believer that cravings during pregnancy indicate a need for something nutritional that the body isn't receiving enough of, so I say...chow down on some smoked salmon!!
Good luck :)

Here is some info from the FDA:
FDA's Recommendation on Fish and Salmon
In March 2004, FDA and EPA revised its advisories on mercury in fish for pregnant women and young children. Generally they are advised to eat no more than 2 meals of low-mercury fish per week - one can of salmon or half a salmon steak is considered one meal.
Most fish has mercury in it, but salmon is lower level. Check out this website, it will give you what your exposure is based on the fish you eat:

carcinogens are basically cancerous and bad for the health which could also be found in smoked foods. etc. food craving for pregnant women are only pyschological. however, our body would crave for such food during pregnancy because it basically what our body needs for physiological reasons for fetal development as well. YES for smoked fish tuna, NO unless contraindicated when you have history of tuna allergy, tuna expired, etc, NEVER EAT THE CARCINOGENIC PART.
i hope I can be a help. Good luck to your preganancy!

"Some countries advise pregnant women not to eat cold meats or smoked fish because of the risk of listeria. In the UK, we don't advise women to avoid these products because the risk is very low" - Food Standards Agency
Go for it!
