"Another one bites the dust" means someone (or something) else is defeated. The phrase was made famous in a song by the rock group Queen. In the gangster-oriented song, there was a not so subtle implication that "bite the dust" could mean "was killed".

Today the song (and phrase) is mostly heard at sporting events. At a baseball game it might be heard when a batter strikes out or a pitcher is taken out of the game. It could also be heard at the end of each game as a team makes its way through a playoff tournament.

When your fighting (before boxing rings) they used to just fight in the street (and if your in a western) it'd be dirt on the floor, or known as dust, and when some one would fall over, they possibly have their mouth open in pain i imagin, and it would look like they were eating 'biting' the dirt on the floor.. er-go, bites the dust...

dead, left behind, comes from the term eating dust as in racing cars and the tires spining dust behind it. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST
