A gallon of Diesel has more energy than a gallon of gasoline. As a result, Diesel will give you 20-30% more miles per gallon.

Given that Diesel now costs around 10-15% more than gasoline, Diesel is probably the lower fuel cost.

Also, for a given engine size (say 6.0L) you get more horsepower for the Diesel.

Probably the fuel costs are close enough that you should decide based on what you want to drive, and as the other answer said, factors like engine reliability and longevity.

A diesel would be the better choice.A gasoline engine large enough to pull your trailer would get terrible mileage.

It really doesn't matter that much when you get up into that reqired horsepower range. The difference in mileage is eaten by fuel cost and vice versa. I'd suggest choosing the motor that has the best track record as far as longevity and dependability.
