Yes - I was in Canada last year and they're Inuits now.
I didn't meet any, so no idea if they're offended by Eskimo.

I think it depends on the individual. You could call one person an Eskimo and they'd not be bothered. Another might take offence and say you should refer to them as an inuit.
Unless you can overcome that wonderful aspect of individuality in human nature (and to be honest, why would you?) then I'm afraid you're stuffed.
The other problem is that those who choose to be offended and report it as racist - are rarely those that it has anything to do with??! Samuel L Jackson says "N*gger" in a film and suddenly all the middle class white guardian readers are up in arms.....

Some Inuits are Eskimos, but not all. So, when you use it as a blanket term, it could be considered racist or just ignorant. I am not using ignorant as an attack. It simply means that one does not know something.

No it isn't racist; its like our being called white or caucasian or yanks. Did you know that the term 'Eskimo' is an American Indian word? In Canada the Eskimos refer to themselves as Inuit & in Alaska they call themselves Inupiat or Yupik.

The word "eskimo" actually means "meat eater", so it could be be offensive to an Inuit, but they probably realise that most people of the world do not understand this, so they may be tolerant of being called Eskimo. Americans/Canadians cannot use this as an excuse, however, because Inuits are citizens of their countries.

It's not racist....just now "politically incorrect"
it's not like using the "n" word...

No it isn't racist. The Eskimos are eskimos and actually prefer that term to Inuit because The Inuit is just one single tribe and not all Eskimos are Inuit.

Inuit is already in the plural. Nobody says "Eskimo" anymore unless they either want to cause a problem or do it jokingly among friends. The proper term most assuredly is Inuit, and for one person, Inuk.
