that is known as borborygmi
It happens when your stomach walls squeeze together in an attempt to mix and digest food that isn't there; resulting in gases and digestive juices sloshing around in your empty stomach.

However hunger really has nothing to do with an empty stomach but, instead, is a product of certain nutrients missing in the blood. Our brains contain a "hunger center," which functions as an accelerator, or as a brake, for our stomachs and intestines.

Emptiness of food is replaced by air and when the brain send a signal that the body needs food, the intestine start performing their function and sound is produced by intestine movement in conjunction with existence of air.

Your body is like a time clock so when you eat regularly at the same time everyday the body sends blood and acid to the stomach where it expects food and if its not there the fluids just regurgatates around the empty stomach

it's just a difference in the acoustics mate - all the time there's gas and other substances being moved around your gut (if you put a stethoscope to your belly you'll hear it) but when there's food in your stomach you don't hear it without any aid. However, when your stomach's empty, the sounds coming up from your gut echo around in there and get slightly amplified and we all hear that you need to eat!
