Your best bet will be to seek out the Consumer Report for those makes during that time frame. You will get answers all over the place in here from Chevy haters, die hard American auto guys and who knows who else...too much opinion. Consumer Reports is 3rd party and non-biased. You can search it out on the internet, call for a report or sign up to the website...I think it's real cheap too. They'll give you comparisons based on reliablity, affordablity, MPG, etc.
Keep in mind though, a lot of these older cars have been used and abused, especially those that have made their way into someone garage who's been watching too much Fast n Furious...so make sure you know what you're looking at if you're buying a car, or, ask to take it to a mechnic who can give it a once over.

I can't think of a single Chevy model (except their full size truck) that can compete with a Toyota model in terms of quality, reliability, and efficiency. Yes, you'll pay more for a Toyota because they have high residual/resale value.

Toyota, if you plan on keeping the car. You will get more miles out of the Toyota, less maintenance required.
