When God made creation, he also gave his creations the ability to choose their own actions. This is one of many reasons why God is to be worshiped, because he created beings that could choose to do what they will. With the creation of man, there was only one rule, and the breaking of that rule, eating the fruit of the tree, constituted the first sin, that man has knowledge of their actions and will be responsible for all they do. Jesus was alive as long as satan has, for he is the son of God and sits on the right hand of God. He was sent to Earth to witness the sins that were occurring, to see if it were possible for mankind to withstand temptation and fulfil the Commandments. By dying, Jesus is giving an example that the world is not so wicked that one cannot live without sinning (with help from God). That being said, Jesus was the son of God, and is the only being capable of not sinning (as all mankind has eventually died). This may seem like a contradiction, as death is often viewed a result of sin. However, Jesus was not a normal spirit; he was the son of God. Jesus is often called the word of God, meaning that spiritually, what God says is performed through Him. If Jesus had sinned in fleshly form, it would have meant that he would have sided with satan, and would have started a spiritual war of sorts. This is demonstrated in the temptations of satan of the wealth of power Jesus could have on Earth.

The death of Jesus was fortold; at least Jesus knew that he had to die as a sacrifice for mankind (demonstrated in his interactions with Judas). Jesus was killed because he treatened to change the strict restrictions of spiritual service that Judiasm imposed by stating he was the son of God and teaching that all were equal. Judiasm is strict, in the sense that it does not readily change its structure or sets of belief, which is what Christ taught against, hence he was persecuted by the Jews. This had to happen for two reasons: (1) it demonstrates the purity of the scriptures (the Old Testament) before the coming of Christ, and (2) it allowed Christ, whose spirit was not human, to die and consume the sins of the world. This does not mean that we are without sin, it means that through prayer one can be forgiven of their actions (hence the second birth after the second coming of Christ). The death of Christ is seen as the last sacrifice, as afterwards, no sacrifices for the many feasts of the Jewish calender were offered from the followers of Christianity.

As far as I understand it Jesus died in order to take the punishment for mankind's wrongdoings instead of us having to be punished. It's like a mum claiming to have done the murder so her son doesn't have to go to court. She loves him so she covers for him. What I don't quite understand is why, if the perpertrators aren't going to be punished, Jesus does get the punishment. Surely the same effect could be achieved by God forgiving mankind for all their sins? No doubt someone smarter than me is going to come out with something that completely disproves my theory... oh well.

God created the world and He created Adam and Eve. His intend was having everything on earth to belong to them because they belong to God. God only give them one rule to obey to God. Satan talked them into eat that apple, they chose to obey and listen to Satan instead. In that moment Adam and Eve lost that great privilege of the world, and sin enter to them. Sin pass on pass on to their children and children after that. We born with sins. The only thing that can save our sins is to obey God. God sent His only son Jesus Christ to Earth to teaching us about the word of God and obey Him. He ended up die on the cross on earth, instead of just simple go back home, by the sky to Heaven. The happy ending is He became alive again after He die in human body. He became all God again and went to Heaven. However, He sent Holy Spirit here to live with us on Earth.

John 3:16 (New International Version)
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

This is not a philosophical question. The question whether Jesus existed at all is a lot more philosophical.
