Some of the strengths of a theocratic government include the fact that if your population believe in the religion you are using to rule, on the whole (ie like in Iran), they are more likely to believe that your rule is ordained by God. This makes them more likely to support your decisions and obey your laws. Theocratic governments usually suppress other religions, which also means people won't have the option of finding out about other religions. It becomes socially unacceptable not to be a member of the ruling religion, and that makes it even more likely people will support you.

However, there are weaknesses as well. For instance, humans make mistakes and if you make the wrong mistake or too many mistakes they will begin to question your authority, and maybe even the religion itself. Sometimes when you push people too far, or you push an idea on them too forcefully, they rebel and revolt. For instance, the English civil war was the result of religious intolerance. One of the main reasons that the original European Americans left Europe was religious freedom. People will leave your country, taking valuable skills and ability with them, this is bad for the economy as well.

These governments are bad for the country because free thought is the basis of invention and innovation. The freer a society is, the more likely they are to progress. This is partially why nations like the United States and Canada and South Korea are so financially and technologically powerful. When you allow people the freedom to decide what they think and feel, they have more creativity and knowledge.
