When I go under a tunnel in a train for example, my phone seems to have no reception whatsoever, and I therefore wouldn't have a chance of getting through to anyone. Yet, on the screen it reads "Emergency calls only". So my question is how is it possible to get through to emergency services but noone else?

emergency calls will connect via ANY available route, even if your carrier cant be reached... therefore, if you are with O2, and there is no signal via O2, you may still be able to connect via Virgin ... or whoever.
However, there are no special properties that would allow a call to an emergency service to be picked up, if there was no reception for any mobile signal.

Because on Emergency calls your phone will connect to every available netwotk.

Normal calls and its just your service provider.

your phone shows that message when there is some network still being detected. This network might not be the one you are registered to so it wont allow you to make or receive calls using that network. If there is absolutely no network then the phone would show No Network - I assume you are using a Sony Ericsson phone
