when my daughter was 5 mths i started her on rice cereal she loved it...as she got older though,i became very worried that she would choke it was my biggest fear so she was having custards and cereals and all that but as far as biscuits and toast went i couldnt do it i was terrified .... a friend who has lots of kids kinda made me feel like i was doing the wrong thing because i wasnt giving her sandwiches at the age of 7 mth i was too scared to even give her soft steamed carrot! but then a while later i just wasnt scared anymore and she was eating everything she is two now and she eats just like every other 2 yr old.. she will even eat stir fry's for me....obviously its not an issue anymore i just wanted to hear other mothers thoughts on this as im trying to fall again and i know im going to be as scared the second time as i was the first so when did you start giving your little ones toast, biscuits and stuff?????

you will probably surprise yourself and you'll most likely be less scared the second time around. second babies have a tendency to erase certain fears we have with our first babies.

a friend of mine has given her 1.5 year old plenty of things that he wasn't supposed to eat until later. it's b/c she has 3 boys and it's too hard to deny the third what the other 2 have. the baby has been eating chocolate, peanut butter, juice, seafood....all kinds of stuff MUCH earlier than you're supposed to....but it works and it's not a problem, so good for them, i say!

usually, when baby can grab things with a pincher grasp (using thumb and fore finger) that's when baby is mature enough to handle solids. start with easily dissolved items, like gerber fruit and veggie puffs and cheerios. these are great starters b/c even if they get a little stuck, they are easily softened with saliva. also, pasta pick-ups (cut in half) are good starters too.

take care.

hello there.
If you are breastfeeding your baby she does NOT need anything at all except YOUR milk until she is around 6 months old. At that point she is old enough to sit up in a highchair and eat a small amount of infant rice cereal off the tip of a spoon. If she tolerates that well, within another month or so I would add mashed banana. There is no need to buy special baby food for that. Just peel a very ripe banana and pull the edge of a spoon along the length of the banana and it will turn in into a smooth pudding like consistancy. Contrary to what your friend is trying to tell you, adding solid foods too soon can cause a lifetime of overweight and food alergies. The other important thing to remember is that when you are breast feeding, everytime you replace a single ounce of breast milk for solid food you are replacing a far superior food for an inferior food. Nothing that you can feed your baby will EVER be as good for your baby as the milk that you make for her. It contains all the immunities that it has taken you a lifetime to accumulate and it will protect your baby from getting sick. It is a proven fact that compared to bottle fed babies, breast fed babies hardly ever get sick and if they do it does not last as long as bottle fed babies. It is the BEST thing you can ever do for your baby!
I did not give my babies ( I had 5 of them) the kind of things that you mentioned, like toast and biscuits until they had little teeth and could sit up well by themselves. My babies loved to have a piece of a pancake to chew on when they were 6 or 7 months old. Do not be in a hurry. As long as you are breast feeding your baby is getting the most important nutrition and all the other things will come in good time. Your baby will let you know when he wants other things. I nursed all my babies until they were over a year old. It is the greatest gift you can give them next to life itself!
Take care and good luck.
p.s. Read the book "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding". It is by the La Leche League, they are the authority on breastfeeding.
Lady Trinity~ (I just had to add...please never give a baby that is only two weeks old cereal! That would give any baby colic!)

i started both my daughters at three months! In the uk it is recommended you start weening around 6-9months now! What i think is that you should start to ween your baby, when they are ready, not when somebody or some thing on a label says you should! You will be able to tell that your child is ready by demanding more feeds during the day, or is not satisfied with just a bottle.
Start with a bit of baby rice..... to let the child get used to the texture! Then gradually try different taste to get your child ready for different flavors etc for when they are getting older. As the child gets older introduce lumpy foods...

hope this helps and good luck

For me my I started cereal at four months. I would mix baby fuit food in with it and he would eat it. At five months I started with the vegtables and fruit but only one kind a week. By six months he was eating rice and beans. And at eight months he could chew pieces of cooked diced chicken. Every child is different, and all develop at different times, it all depends on how may teeth they have so that they can chew food properly. I would just follow your instincts mom's always know what their child needs.

My daughter was 5 1/2 months when I started her on baby food. She was around 8 months when I began to give her some soft table foods. She is now 15 months old and eats pretty much anything I give her :)

Obviously, when a baby has some teeth to help with the "mushing" process is a good time to introduce toast and such. I don't think you did anything wrong with your first child...I guess take you cues from your baby. My daughter didn't get her first tooth until after her 1st birthday so we stayed away from things that couldn't be easily swallowed on their own.

Just listen to your baby...not your friends :)

Sandwiches are not necessary at 7 months. In fact, I would have concerns about early introduction of wheat--wheat is a common allergy. I started my child on rice cereals when she was about 6 months. I was concerned about allergies and introduced foods slowly, one new vegetable or fruit every few days. When she was a year old, I got very interested in dinners with meat, chicken or pork chops using the braising technique. The cuts of meat were tender to begin and braising makes them more tender and they were thinly chopped.

Babies do no need teeth to chew. Trust me on this one! LOL

You will be less scared with most things as you have your second child.

6 weeks i started my kids on rice cereal. table food like mashed potatoes at about 6-7 months. In my opinion 7 months is too young for a sandwich, but hey everyone is different, thats what makes this world unique.
