The babies start of in the female and are passed to the male. presumably the evolutionary advantage of this is the female is free to breed again much more quicky.

Isn't Mother Nature wonderful? This species was created this way. The males carry the offspring, go into labor, and give birth to miniature independent versions of themselves. Way cool.

There is no "protecting of the babies" as the other poster mentioned. Seahorses are born independent and able to immediately take care of themselves. There's no parenting or protecting done.

The female deposits the egg into a pouch the male has similar to kangaroos, once the egg is in his pouch the male fertilizes the egg, and the egg is incubated in the pouch until it hatches.

because males are cooler.

seriously, the females can have more babies if the male cares for the eggs... she lays the eggs in the male and then move on to develope more eggs... She doesn't need to worry about taking care of the eggs and fries.
