As I understand it, the main reasons water is bad for electronics are that: It corrodes them and; it bridges circuits and makes them short.
If the water hasnt been in there very long, then it should not have corroded anything. If it hasnt had any power going through it, then it wont have had a chance to short circuit. So fingers crossed, it might be alright. But make sure that it is completely dry (dont overheat it to do this) and maybe put it in a sealed box with some of those silica gel bags you get when you buy shoes or cameras and the like. good luck

Like the other guy said, water and chemicals can corrode the metal inside the device. But this is the least of your problems. All this means is that the device might have a shorter life span than usual. Then again it may not. The real problem is that the water in the device can cause a short circuit. A short circuit is when current flows through a path that was not intended to. If an electronic component sees more current than it can handle then it will burn out. The real question is how well seal an i-pod is. Also, the battery might have not conducted current through the device. Maybe it just shorted itself. What I would do is change the batteries if they are of the external kind. Then turn it on and see what happens. You can luck out especially if the i-pod was turned of before it went into the washing machine. The same goes for other electronics devices. you can put any electronic device except your TV in a washing machine without batteries and as long as you let it dry it should be fine. Hopefully you will luck out.
There should be no problem for the the washing machine. These are design to handle large amount of current and is design so that if a short circuit does happens, it diverst the current to ground thus keeping you safe.

My son sent his Ipod Nano through a complete wash and spin cycle (by accident of course) and much to my surprise it worked once it had dried out. I'd leave it in a hot dry place for a few days before turning it on.
Good luck !

Im not sure if it will work, it depends on whether it or any of the circuitary got damaged. You've done the right thing by not switching it on yet!! Let it dry out completely for at least 3-7 days, then try switching it on! If you switch it on whist it is still wet it is likely that it will short circuit and will definately not work!

If its completely dry you might be OK, i've spilt drinks on things before and they've worked fine afterwards. Might not last as long now though.

It may work, though you might want to go to some sort of a mechanic to get it fixed if it doesn't work.
