Yes. We're losing our people-skills in this day and age.
Parents aren't raising kids anymore - computers are. The anonymity of the internet. Playstation. We're losing touch with our kids...

Yep, they are, at least, more self-centered than older people. The area of the brain associated with higher-level thinking, empathy, and guilt is underused by teenagers. When considering an action, the teenage medial prefrontal cortex, located in front of the brain, doesn't get as much action as adults.
As you get older you use more or less the same brain network to make decisions about your actions as you did when you were a teenager, but the crucial difference is that the distribution of that brain activity shifts from the back of the brain (when you are a teenager) to the front (when you are an adult).
Adults are much faster at figuring out how their actions would affect themselves and other people.
Here's the link about that study: http://www.livescience.com/humanbiology/060907_teenage_feelings.html
Also, I think, most teenagers today are more pampered by their folks. There are also so many resources available for them to use that sometimes they take it granted things & become spoiled.

Youths are so self-centered because they haven't realized that the world will barrel on without them in a heartbeat.
Once they venture into the real world, they will realize that they need to stop seeing themselves as priority number one all the time. It comes from being spoiled. Some kids aren't like this...but if you live in America and you're surrounded by rich kids, it's pretty tough to find any empathy.

It's their job to be self centered because that is where they are developmentally. "Self-centered" gets a bad rap but it is necessary to develop a strong ego. People have said that adolescents think the world revolves around them. This is true for many teens. If they have a "zit" and walk into a room they think that everyone is focused on the blemish. This is normal. Being self centered allows needs to be met -- a good thing. When adults meet their needs [not be be confused with overindulgence], they learn to live cooperatively in society.

I certainly don't have the right to make that judgment on all youths, but when I was you I was very self centered. It took a hard dose of reality when I got into the real world to see that there is more important things in the world.

Yes. They may be at a time in their development where they dont yet fully undestand how their actions will affect others.
Its difficult being young, for example those in puberty have to adjust to hormonal and emotional changes. They just have so many new things going on internally that it is hard to focus on the external world.
Those of us who are adults have to be more understanding and provide more empathy and guidance. Youth has always been this way and always will be this way. Its our attitude towards it that needs changing.

No, I don't believe for the most part they are self centered. They are growing and learning, and during the teen age years there is a great deal of growth going on in their brains. They are just learning and experiencing life. They learn as they live, and if they have had proper home training they will be fine. God bless****

yes, I think because we (parents) give them everything. We protect them from everything . We have given them too many rights. We have taught them that they are # 1 in our books ands for some reason we expect them to believe they are not the only ones in the world. When they are handed eveything and spoiled rotten how do we expect them to know different. I am not being sarcastic.

Eh, I am a youth, and I am not that normal extrovert youth. I am quiet, and separated. Yeah, your question is not unfounded, there are many of my mates who think they are great. I find them stupid.
