The trouble is this - not only does tax money provide a great amount of money to governments, but the tobacco industry employs many people and many farms are supported by the industry. They are a powerful lobby and it is impressive that regulation of smoking has managed to come as far as it has.
However, despite the arguments regarding secondhand smoke (which are only just beginning to be adequately addressed), cigarettes are the personal choice of the smoker, and they have the right and must have the right to choose whether or not they will smoke.
Simply outlawing something does not stop or help the problem whatsoever. Narcotics are a great example of this. If you deny people a personal freedom such as this through law, they will simply ignore the law and exercise their right.

They are going to buy them regardless of whether PetCo stops selling or not. What about crickets? Those are sold as feeders! Even feeder fish, same thing! Does that mean that we need to stop owning lizards and carnivorous fish? It is a cycle of life! Regardless of whether PetCo stops selling, peoples snakes aren't going to stop eating! They will just get then somewhere else! Has anyone ever told these people how livestock is killed for people food? That isn't very humane either! Its the circle of life.. and it moves us all.. through dispare and hope... hehehe.. dumb hippies! Get jobs and find better things to whine about. Something that really matters like the millions of cats and dogs a day that are slaughtered because they have no homes!!!!

read your history books. this was tried with the liqueur industry during prohibition and all this did was give the " gangster era of speakeasies " a chance to sell liqueur illegally and make the gangsters rich as an example Al Capone, " Bugs " Segal, etc.the government lost control of protecting the public and many died from " bathtub gin " " moonshine " and homemade liqueur because there were no tests to make certain the liqueur was safe for human consumption

From memory, I think they banned tabacco many years ago in the US, and as a result, the mafia was form...they started with just tabacco, then the organisation grew and grew and became what it is today.
