A virtual world is a "made up" place. This usually refers to the "world" or "universe" in which a game takes place in. For example: The story line and game play of Asheron's Call takes place in a land called Dereth. Thus, Dereth is a virtual world. The real world is where we live when we are not playing a game.

I've come to realize that the virtual world is nothing more than the real world except in print. Think about it: there are news sites, dating sites, places to shop, auctions, magazines, networking sites like yahoo 360 and MySpace...there are all these fabulous places to learn things and do things on the Internet that are pretty much the same as the places in the real world, the only differences are that information is closer at hand and everyone has to type everything instead of saying it. The virtual world is very, very similar to the real world, socially, commercially, educationally.....etc.

*Edit: I assumed you were referring to the internet as opposed to 'real' life; any virtual world is as real as we make it to be.

Since you asked this question in "philosophy," you should get a philosophical answer.

The phrase "I think, therefore I am" is possibly the only real truth. How do we know that this world is real? We don't. It's cliche', but the whole Matrix theme comes to mind. Do we know what's real? No. That's why even the most staunch science is grounded in theory. That's why there's a "theory" of gravity. All that we know is based on inductive logic (the premises of deductive logic, for instance) and therefore everything we believe to be fact cannot truly be proved to be real. Maybe when you die you actually wake up from a dream....

It's becoming harder to tell the differences as we become more linked as a society. The biggest difference is that in virtual worlds, people take control over their lives, and in the actual world, they don't.

a reality created by human science and technologies to create or recreate "reality".
the real world its out there, created by "God" or who ever you believed created the universe, its laws and all nature.
the virtual world its an imitation of that reality or an invented one that feels almost real and believable cause you experience sight and sound through a computer system.
now, not all technology its "virtual" like the name says, its only the one that helps you imitate reality basis; not even been "online" its considered "virtual".
