Thankfully we have the right to carry a concealed weapon here. So be sure to arm yourself. Nowhere is safe, you should always take precautions.

Go to http://www.kcpd.org and look at the crime maps and the homicide report. Stay out of the areas with big red splotches. Look at http://www.bestplaces.net and get some actual stats on crime in the area.

Gen as to your reference to Raytown, you don't know squat! Raytown has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the metropolitan area. however, there is not much there for a tourist.

Avoid Johnson County, KS There is a Smug alert for Gen there!

Lol...hate to tell you, but Kansas City is not that bad. Neither side is. Now...if you want your car stolen go to Kansas City, Kansas, but if you want to get shot, murdered and killed go to Kansas City, MO. That's one reason why I'm thankful I live on the Kansas side! - lol
KCK isn't any worse than St. Louis. In fact last year a poll on crime was taken and Kansas City was ranked 16th in the nation, with St. Louis being the worst. I don't know where your from, but there is crime everywhere regardless of where you come from.
Yeah, sure there are some places that aren't considered the best neighborhoods, but like others have recommended Crown Center and the Town Center Plaza are nice places. Kansas City is VERY ethnically diverse, and I really don't think that they focus on "foreigners" as fresh fish, if you know what I mean.
Good question though!

Yeup... just stay away from 31st and Prospect. Keep down by the Plaza or Crown Center and you're fine. If you go to the suburbs, keep out of Kansas City, Kansas-- all the other ones are fine. Kansas City isn't THAT violent of a city.

Nobody will notice you are a tourist since there aren't that many in Kansas City, haha. Actually, most people will be thrilled to meet somebody from a different country.
I lived there and I liked it, but honestly, I have seen safer places.

I would think you'd be as safe or as unsafe as a local. Thugs and bad guys usually don't ask to see your passport when they mug u. ;)
