An ACTIVE volcano is one that has erupted sometime during the last few hundred years. Kilauea, Hawaii, and Mount St. Helens are active volcanoes. BTW, Mt. St. Helens last erupted in spectacular fashion in May 1980, NOT 1984 or 2004. However, it is still active, and may erupt some time in the fairly near future.
A DORMANT volcano is one that has erupted sometime during the last several thousand years, but has NOT erupted during the last few hundred years. Mauna Kea, Hawaii is a dormant volcano. Mauna Kea has erupted several times in the last 10,000 years. The most recent eruption was about 3,500 years ago.
An EXTINCT volcano is one that has NOT erupted during the last several thousand years. Kohala volcano, Hawaii, is an extinct volcano. Its most recent eruption was about 120,000 years ago

Mt. st. Helens 1984, State of washington
Haleakala, MAUI, Most Recent Eruption
Perhaps about A.D. 1790, but newly obtained radiocarbon ages suggest the most recent eruption probably occurred earlier, sometime between A.D. 1480 and 1600. (see Volcano Watch essay, September 9, 1999).
