Because you fail far more times than you succeed. Success lasts for a moment, failure leaves an imprint that takes a lot of effort and determination to scrub off of your mind. Success is just the cherry on top, failure makes the experience worthwhile.

If we were successful in all we ever did, life could be rather bland after awhile. We'd lose that ooomph that motivates us, the challenge that moves us ever onward. Mistakes are like spices or like the valleys between the mountains, they add variation to our routine and in the process teach us the way to go. With each failure or mistake we learn to rule out a possibility and take with us the added wisdom of experience.

When we are in a failure, we don't want to stay in that state because it only brings unpleasurable feeling to us. So we look for causes of the failure and we try and construct ways to understand the causes and to overcome them. But when we are successful, we just want to enjoy the pleasure coming from the success. We rarely look at the causes for that success, unless when other people point it out for us, and this is the benefit that comes from praises. I think this is why it's rare for people to learn from their successes.

Both success and failure have wisdom to offer. We just take success for granted.

Notice , that we are very very alert during extreme moments, moments of danger, like when heading for a near-fatal collision while driving, or those few moments when we fall off from a height, yet to touch the bottom ... etc..
Receptivity is excellent when we are very alert, and the mind is relatively silent (without memory, conclusions, poking /interfering).
Failure brings us closer to such 'alert' state, than success. We have lesser conclusions, having failed. In fact we become more open minded(receptive) to 'look' for causes, corrections etc...

A very good question. Could it be something to do with success being built upon what is known or assumed but failure makes us think and act in novel ways to overcome difficulties.

Though we may gain wisdom we gain little else. Finally pushing past any fear or obstacle that may keep us from reaching success gives us the ultimate gift. I don't think that the wisdom we gain is any greater or less. Just different.

When we fail, we need to find something positive in it. and we start thinking and analyzing what we have learned.
In success it does not matter, since the success itself already is a positive thing.
