A nurse midwife is an RN who has their masters degree in specializing in midwifery. It is a 6 year program (depending on if you go fulltime). You can check with www.rn.ca.gov to find accredited nursing schools. I know UCLA offers a degree in midwifery.
My opinion is to get your BSN or AS in nursing & then find a college which offers AS/BSN to MSN. It's a cheaper way to do things and you can work as an RN with your ASN.

In Australia It takes 3 years at university to become a registered nurse, and then one more year (post graduate) to become a midwife. You can also become a midwife without the the Registered Nursing bit, that takes 3 years. must apply to University, you can become an enrolled nurse, that is through TAFE, it takes one year, and you get PAID for it!
