My grandmother told me when she seen me with my MP3 that if I listened to it all the time, and really loud it could cause me to lose my hearing. I am listening to it right now. Is she right?

Note: Lowest setting is 1 (in my ears)
Highest: 31 (out of ear so someone can hear)

Yes, she is correct. Listening to your iPod or any loud music source will damage your hearing. If you get a good pair of earbuds or phones and keep the volume down, it's perfectly fine. The trick is to not play it at a volume louder than normal room conversation.

There are tiny hairs in your inner ear that translate the sound into nerve impulses that your brain interprets. Loud music (or loud sounds) will cause damage to these hairs, resulting in hearing loss for all or some frequencies. If it only happens occasionally the loss my be reversible. If it happens repeatedly or for prolonged periods of time, it be permanent.

Playing the iPod at full volume so someone else can hear it will likely damage the earbud, so be careful of that too unless you like buying new earbuds from time to time.

If you really listen to it at the lowest setting, you shouldn't have any problem.

Your grandmother is right. You can lose hearing permanently. Keep it low. Also don't use the ear buds as those actually push the sound into your ears. Get a good pair of head phones that you could also lay on your shoulders to hear.
Just for your information, if you lose your hearing and need hearing aids, one aid will cost about $3,000.00. For two ears, that's $6,000.00. It will be more expensive in years to come.
Please keep the volume down, save your hearing and have fun listening to your music.
I wish I had done that.

If you listen to music at higher than 50 decibels (about half the iPod volume I think) for over an hour, then there is a risk that your hearing may become impaired over a period of time.

I think I read the risk is about the same as going to a loud rock concert and standing near the front for hours at a time.

Try to keep the volume down as low as you can if you are listening for longer periods of time (more than an hour), but as long as you are aware of the volume and time you spend listening and can control it accordingly i'm sure you will be fine. :o)

If it is loud for you, then it is too loud for your ears over time. But why would we care if you go deaf. But let me tell you a story.... there was person who party all the time in very loud clubs when she was young and now when is an old fart (35) she is made fun of behind her back because she has to talk very loud because she can't hear. Do you want to be like that?

I listen to msuic on my computer with 80 watt alternating 210v house current powered sub woofers at a volume level so loud my walls and foundation of my home vibrate due to the bass of the speakers on my old skool Rock & Roll Pink Floyd baby. My nieghbors hold rock dances when I play my speakers after dark. abot once a week and the cops don't show because I have one for a neighbor and he is normally in on the party planning. "old boy" networks are so useful.

I have lost some hearing from years of listening to loud music.
I was told by everyone to turn it down, but I didn't listen.
I wish I had.
