Bryce, James
"Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance. It is also owed to justice and to humanity. Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong."

Please elaborate on your opinion in regards to it.

Iraq did NOT attack us or have the capability to do so..

Republicans do not have a lock on being prolife..43% of democrats are, you know

You can't get 5 people in a room to agree, it is ridiculous to expect 250 million people to all agree (and all agee with you)

You are justifying your position politically at the expense of the truth of this quote, sir

No, you do not support your country if it is wrong. If Hitler went to war to harm more Jews and you were German, would you support the decision of your country with no question until millions more jews were killed riducous.

One can support the troops and not the war you know..

If your country decided to attack China because they didn't like that they were using too much gasoline and decided to drop several nukes, would you support your country and ask questions later when millions of
chinese were incinerated and the war stopped as it now had no worry about competition for getting gasoline. To say one should support an cruel war like those mentioned above or the use of many tons of depleted uranium, believed to increase bifrth defiormities one million times and birth deformities were up 1000% as they are in Iraq..you blindly support that kind of evil..forgot Aquinas' words "a law that is unjust is no law" there is a higher alligence than to country and that is to God

you said in His word "do unto others .." That supercedes one's country. When Kennedy spoke that quote, he was not referring to supporting wars no matter how unjust or how many people they killed. Do not dare to twist his good words to support your cruel positions.

I agree with the quote and the additional comments you made in the additional details.

Patriotism is working to make the country the best it can be..

This can be illustrated by showing an example and then applying it to this situation.

One does not accept the actions of your child when wrong, blindly, and only because he is a member of your family.

No, if you love him-- you discipline him, correct him, apply the rod (consequences such as investigations or impeachment or withdrawal of the WMD's you want to use)

You show him a better way to do it..you demonstrate how he is to do it better and show how next time he can act with compassionate and fairplay when he is cruel to his playmates or siblings.(like when we used depleted uranium)

If he is right, you teach him how to be diplomatic, standing up for himself but without hasty decisions like punching someone in the nose..you teach him how to reason and compromise. Only when the person is doing wrong to your child over and over and only when these things do not work and you are certain youre child is in the right by investigating the situation thoroughly, do you encourage how to box or protect himself..

If he does something wrong, you praise him when he gets it right..you model right for him..you speak up when he is doing something wrong ---you still love him but don't approve of his behavior.

In fact, the more you love him and because you love him..you don't ignore the bad or wrong behavior..if you praise him no matter what he does..he will learn to keep doing it and never improve but actually get worse as he pushes the boundaries to see can I get away with this or maybe this..how far can I go before daddy and mommy do anything or say anything or teach me right or really look at me or punish me..he goes further down the wrong path..

When one corrects and teaches and does the good things above, not only does it demonstrate your real love, and encourage the child to love you back if he is really a member of your family. If he is unrependtant or uncorrectable or defient, one might question if he is truly your son.

Correcting and immmediatly speaking up when the child is wrong and correcting behavior appropriately produces a better child.

IIt is we -the American people- who are supposed to be the parents. It was we who gave birth to the country..it is we who are supposed to be in charge..

Something is wrong. Please, people, look at this comparison and return to sanity.

Agreed. Too often the constitution is used as an excuse to hinder progress rather than a tool to assist it. Gun control for example.

It's a nice quote, but our nation is never going to be "righteous as well as strong" if we can't agree on what these words mean.

Is it "righteous" to take the lives of the unborn?

Is it "strong" to attempt to conquer those who would attack us if we didn't (In other words, will we fight terrorists over here, or over there)? I hope this kind of thinking isn't too advanced for you "janie".
