Birds do not actually sing. They chirp as a form of communication with one another. the human perspective sees the sound as soothing and harmonious and hence takes it that the bird is singing? hmmm... cats would prefer to meow and sleep i guess.

It is the result of billions of years of evolution. Birds use it for various purposes, particularly mating. Cats have developed other ways to attract mates.

If you could "understand" birdsongs, you find that all they talk about is windspeed, flight vectors,take-offs and landings, optimal wing beating rates and such. They throw in a little chater about predator threats and where to find a cheap meal. You be bored to tears listening to it.
Cats, on the other hand are all about stealth. They're like the F-117a fighters, trying to sneak in underneath the radar of the birds, squirrels and other critters. If you're trying to sneak up on something, it isn't in your own best interest to make a bunch of sounds.
Cats, when they talk, are begging humans for food or attention.

I've heard cats sing. It's just a different type of singing. I have two and both can belt it out.

Listen to a Slayer song. If that's not cats screeching or caterwauling, I don't know what is.
