Real joy is many things for me. It is creating a song and listening to the final recorded mix after countless hours of rehearsing and recording; the culmination of years of craftsmanship.
Real joy is just the subtle pleasure of "living well;" being married to a sexy, intelligent woman with whom I share a long list of common interests.

Real joy cannot be any one of the joys that I have experienced in my life. All types of joy that I know of, none of the last very long. I will imagine real joy to be something that cannot be shaken even slightly.

Real joy is to remain in a state of happiness regardless of difficult circumstances. I was reading an excerpt from St.Frances' writings in Assisi where he says something like" If when you are cold and hungry and are looking for lodgings for the night and it is pouring with rain, and you are turned away time and again, and you still remain in a state of compassion and forgiveness, you have attained joy.
Well I'm not at that stage. I've been doing spiritual work for a long time now and it is a goal of mine to be in this state. It is not easy to maintain. At best, so far it has come, feels absolutely wonderful, then I lose it. But I haven't given up.

The emotions we manifest are from the intuitive part of our mind. When we have sufficient control over this manifestation, this very control gives certain joy, since we become a sort of witness to our own emotions.
Now such joy would last, because we really enjoy 'conscious' participation in the situation, joyously, whether it is about sharing a sorrow , joke, joy etc.

"Joy" can be a second ...or a minute or a hour or a day...a week or month or many years..
Joy can come in the morning when you wake up and the heat is on when the tile floor is ice cold. and the heat warms up fast
Joy can be the smell of coffee
Joy can be when you hold your first child at that split second you know he or she is your baby
Joy can be the name of a girl you met....that you repeat her name over and over again..and you never want to lose her...she is on your mind constantly
Joy is the name of a bottle of soap I use to wash dishes
(it doesn't last) ...lol
Joy is the feeling you get when your pet jumps on your lap....and gives you a fast kiss.....and you love it and don't like it at the same time...
Joy is a marriage that has it's ups and downs.....and it lasts and lasts through good and bad times....it keeps right on going...until death separates the two....then Joy ends....
Sincerely,
Mama Jazzy Geri

I think real joy is when you feel completely happy and satisfied with something in life.
And just like happiness, joy is a feeling that you can have for a while, a few moments sometimes, it's not a 'state' it's a feeling that won't last forever, but the few moments we feel them, are totally worth it!

Any form of joy that does not last, can't be 'real joy'! Yes, real joy has to last, and, establish that it is real joy! There is real joy in realising this: like in 'giving', when you know what 'giving' is; like in 'forgiving'; in 'loving', in 'caring', in 'listening' (esp. to the sounds of nature, the honest sounds of the true world around!)......oh, yes, there is a lot of real joy out there for us to discover and enjoy! (There is joy in a good friendship, real joy, if only it would last!)

Happiness and joy in this life, based in earthly feelings and experiences, does not last, as others here have said.
Joy that lasts is found in giving one's life to Jesus Christ.
Knowing that He has died to pay the penalty for my sins and that He is preparing a place in heaven for me is my source of unending joy.

When you shed all desires, all attachments with material world, real joy will come. This actually exists inside you but you are distracted seeking joy in external things which give you momentary pleasure. If you want everlasting joy, search it inside yourself.

Real joy seems to happen when you mix your passion within your daily life as much as you can.
For example, if you really like writing and have a job that enables you to do that or if you take time at night to write.
What is your passion? What do you absolutely love to do? To think about? Find ways to do that or otherwise blend it with your daily life as much as possible.
