A cookie is a text-only string of information that a website transfers to the cookie file of the browser on your computer's hard disk so that the website can remember who you are.
A cookie will typically contain the name of the domain from which the cookie has come, the "lifetime" of the cookie, and a value, usually a randomly generated unique number. Two types of cookies are used on this website-session cookies, which are temporary cookies that remain in the cookie file of your browser until you leave the site, and persistent cookies, which remain in the cookie file of your browser for much longer (though how long will depend on the lifetime of the specific cookie).
Cookies can help a website to arrange content to match your preferred interests more quickly. Most major websites use cookies. Cookies cannot be used by themselves to identify you.

Cookies are small data files created by the browser for the purpose of storing some session related data.
For example, when u login to a particular site a cookie will be created with some login information.
Suppose if u open the same site in another window of the browser without logging out the browser will not ask u to login again and it will directly use the info from the cookie

Small flat crunchy sweet things and they taste nice.
Oh, computer cookies...
Small text files put on your hard disk that record details of who you signed on as / what you looked at / what adverts you responded to / whatever the website wants to record about your session. They are put there by web pages you visit to keep a history of what the computer did on the website so next time you visit it 'knows' who you are and what you did.
Thats how Yahoo mail knows it's you when you reconnect to the mail site (provided you didn't log off which destroyed the cookie and provided the cookie hasn't reached its eat-by (oops, expiry) date.

cookies are used by websites to store details about your connection and session.
in fact yahoo is currently using one for your account so that when you close the window and log in again you will be still connected
many times these cookies have an expiry period for security purposes.

Cookies are very small text files that are stored automatically in your computer when you visit some sites, usually to identify a user. Most of them are harmless but unwanted files.
