i'm not sure which way to go, tank is being custom built for my diamond. want to know if both heat sources together will be harmful and if so which will be better?

Best way to go for heating is a Ceramic Heat Emitter. Snakes do need UV light, but as you should be handling your snake regularly, just take it outside occasionally. One hour of real sunlight a week is ample, and a lot cheaper than running uv lamps. Ceramic heat emitters don't "blow" like normal light bulbs either, making them much more cost-effective in the long run.

After trying out all heating varieties for my reptiles, I have now converted all my tanks to ceramic heat emitters. If you want a light in there so you can see your snake just put a normal globe in with a separate switch, so you can flick it on when you want to see your snake.

Make sure you get a light cover for the heat emitter, so the snake doesn't try to wrap around it and get burnt. (you will need one of these for any light/heat you decide to get)

You will need a light , a grow light , these lights are needed to help the reptile produce vitamin A & D and in a tank this small it will give off a lot of heat as well.I like the incondesent lights as thay give off more heat. If you have plants you will need these lights also.
You should also use a bottom heat tape , under tank heating pad , or heat rock this will keep your pet warm on cool nights and times when you turn the light off.
Also invest in a good thermometer and keep a close eye on it.

What is the tank made of? Plastic, wood, etc. tanks do not do well with heat tapes or undertank heating.

What is your temp control system? If you are using a thermostat or something to monitor and control the ehat, no big deal.

What is the room's ambient temp? If it is warm enough you might not need anything else.

hi there
heat tape is ok.. heat lamp is better ...never use a heat rock it causes to many burns in reptiles all so use a uv light (plant gro lights works good ) not much needed to heat at night unless it get below 65 F in ur home ...12 hr on 12 hr off for lights ..
good luck
hope this helps

i think that this is just personal preference. i have always used a heat lamp. i felt that is was easier to regulate the temp. i wouldn't use both you may become confused and end up with a ill pet! if you do go for a lamp just make sure that you put some chicken wire or mess around it as it is so common for reptiles to coil around the lamp and burn themselves. silly animal.

snakes do NOT need uv light.
they are not baskers, and they prefer to lay on something warm to get to the temp they desire.
heat tape is your best bet, but you must have that stuff on a thermostat so that you don't burn your pet.
if you want a light so that you can see him, go for it.. but snakes (i'm assuming your talking about a snake here) generally hide out in the day..
