It was commonly given as a quick and effective disciplinary award in the 1950s, and although not usually very effective with the die-hard loonies, it worked as a good deterrent with most of us. I know a teacher who still today takes disruptive students to a place where he can't be seen and gives them a good whack. He doesn't have any disciplinary problems in his classes because the kids know he does it. If any make a complaint, he denies it, calls the kids liars and, because they are disruptive in most of their classes, the head believes him.

I remember it well, especially when you were given six of the best. One teacher we had, always insisted on belting your weak hand. I have to say it did keep me in line and it should have never been dispensed with!!!

They had the size 9 pump at my school. I never got it but used to hate seeing the boys get hit. Even at a very young age, it never seemed fair to me that an adult was able to hit a child and get away with it.
