There are trains, but not very many lines. The first link in my sources is for the Vietnamese Railway in English.

Also, check SEAT61.com, as that site is about rail travel the world over.

In Vietnam it depends on where you're going...

I'd suggest you buy the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide to Vietnam books ... then you can find out everything you need to know.

Also, ask on a specialist backpacking / budget travel site like the Lonely Planet Thorntree and you will get lot's of advice from people who know the country well.

Hope that helps you...

Philip

Planes are the best, most comfortable and quickest means of transport.
The train is good for a short journey so you can experiance it. Most people travel on the overnight train between Hue and Hanoi (approx 12hrs).
This is a good choice if your on a budget as you will save on a nights accomodation.
Many backpackers travel on the open bus service which runs from HCMC to Hanoi. Really cheap, but long and slow journey's.
Planes fly to and from most major tourist towns and Vietnam Airlines provide a great service.
It really depends on what you like!

Have a good trip!

Trains only oprate between major cities and are good value. If u want to go 'off the bveaten' EITHER negotiate long distance taxi, check out locsl coach tours, take a long distance bus. In Bangkok there are a couple of operatrors that specialise in backpacker trips to Vietnam and Cambodia for example; one is Charlie's several others in Kao Shan Road

We travel by rail from SaiGon to Hue and back almost every year and really enjoy it. Gives you a chance to see the country side and enjoy yourself visiting. We recommend using the train. If in a hurry we will sometimes fly and that is a lot faster; but not as much fun. Hope you have a good time, cheers.

good advice from the other posters. if you are going to stay in any area for more than a day or two consider renting a motorbike. it's exhilarating to say the least. just drive slow and stay to left. i've also met tourists who bought motorbikes in hanoi, rode them to hcmc and sold them before leaving the country. enjoy!
