My CD- Drive is not working. I want to install OS (winXp) in my new hard disk. I considered fixing my Hard disk in one's system and installing. But I heard it will work in my system? If not suggest me a suitable method to install OS (win Xp)

thanks for answering

You would be better off buying a new CD rom either a CD/rw or DVD/rw they are fairly cheap $30-$60 and you will have a working cd again. Then install the WinXP....Thanks

Do it other way round. Install your friend's CD ROM Drive in your computer. Although you can install XP on your hard drive by installing it in your friend's computer too, then you can remove and install it back in your own computer. You might need to install some drivers for you computer though when you install it back in your computer. Copy the drivers required by your computer in the hard drive itself.

Why not consider buying a new CD Drive?

I am afraid you cant do without a cd rom..because XP is only started from a bootable cd-rom or if you have some edition like 9x then you can run it within windows to upgrade.

And also installing in one's system is also a pain, because when you connect the harddisk back to your system, you have to reinstall all drivers because the hardware changes.

The simplest way is borrow CD from your friend and install OS. Installation on your friend computer will work only if it's similar.

you can install Xp using another computer, however you need to go into your BIOS and reset it to your hard drive before you get into the desktop.
Press F2 and that will get you into your Bios. set it to boot CD Rom first, even if it doesn't work. be sure to press F10 to accept and save your changes

Get a new DVD ROM drive. It will read Cd's and of course DVDs. They are really cheap now (DVD burners for $50 or less) so there's no excuse for a dead CD drive. Good luck!

Take your hard drive to another system to DOS format its c drive partition. (Windows 98 is required to make this partition bootable) ( give a command : format c: /s). Then put it back into your system and run the setup file. You will see c prompt. goto the i386 folder and run win nt for set up).
Hope, that solves your problem.
