Not unless you have file and printer sharing enabled

Start > control Panel > Network Connections > (right click over your wireless connection) > Properties > De select File and printer sharing.

Password protect and encrypt your stuff. People have been fired when a Laptop has been stolen that contains sensitive stuff.

Search on

Encrypt.

Internet Cafe = unsecure, wireless or not. Idea place to access your internet details. You are completely reliant on the honesty of the cafe owners. Think of it like this, would you go on line at home , and invite a random stranger in off of the street to have a look while you log in? You have absolutely no idea what key logging software might be present.

There is no such thing as a secure internet cafe, wireless or not. A few hears ago I used an internet cafe which had keyloggers in the computers. As a result I had 28,000 pounds (about 40,000 $ US) fraudulently transferred from my account.

My lesson was, don't use public access for any private business.

Treat it as if you are plugged directly into the Internet.

So:
1) Use a personal firewall like the one built into XP
2) Disable file and printer sharing.
3) Make sure all user accounts have a password (and not a trivial one).
4) Make sure you've installed all the latest security patches.
5) Don't enter usernames & passwords, credit card details etc into any websites unless they are SSL secured i.e. HTTPS. In this environment anything you send in clear text is likely to be sniffed off the network. Not nice.

unfortunately unsecure networks from internet cafes are not very secure. anyone with a good knowlage of PC software could easily set up a gateway you have to pass through (proxy) to access the internet. this could then require you to input credit card details etc. which would be visible to him. Basically, good for checking mail but nothing sensitive or secure.

I am not completely sure, but I don't believe so. I wouldn't think that public places with free WI-FI would let people come in and get into peoples computer though

yes they can, well spotted! yes you need to be more careful whe nvisiting websites. Try firewall (already installed on all wireless computers) or simply don't buy anything online when going to america. Make sure you take enough cast with you.
