The typical 9-pin Serial port does not support auto-detection for Windows XP. When you install the software and drivers, it will be detected. First, visit the manufacturer's website. Then try http://driverguide.com

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Do you mean an old controller such as an Atari 2600 controller? No, that would not be compatible.
Most gamepad controller will mount themselves if your using XP.
You can buy a cheep unit for like $10 at Radio Shack.
Remember, that 9 pin connector is a serial port. Most of the modern controllers use the larger d connector on the sound card (I think 19 pin - I could be wrong on the count) but you will only have one of those connectors anyways. It may be labeled Midi. You can also get SUB controllers.

Go here and select 'Game Controller'. http://members.driverguide.com/index.php

I think you'll get the driver there. And yes, you'll need to register before downloading. Dont worry, its free.
