I had the same problem.

You have to file a crossover cable and connect both computers using the network cards. Go to a shop and as crossoevr cables ( normal network cables that is creoosd ) and connect. This is the simplest and best way, You can share your files after that,.

The best way to connect a desktop and a laptop would be Bluetooth....You will need two dongles, 1 for each machine...If its not built in....Enable Bluetooth on both the machines and after pairing them start sharing the data wirelessly.
Another convenient way is to use a cable something that is available here:

If you want to just tranfer data from one machine to another, a pen drive would be a good choice.
Thanks.

You need a USB Bridge Cable (£19.99) to connect both machines. You can get it from most PC stores - for example: Maplins http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=USB%20Bridge%20Cable&doy=18m1&source=15
More info. on USB networking here: http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5
With a USB Bridge Cable you can see both screens (Host and Remote) on each machine at the same time, and can drag and drop files between each machine whilst working only on a single screen. Therefore, files and folders can be passed both ways with a USB Bridge Cable. With Direct Cable Connecting, data can only be passed one way, from Host to Guest.
