company (non-agency) and have had to move to a number of different desks to do my work (staff changes, etc). I am helping a lady do her typing, so I had to sit next to her at 'this desk' that belongs to the company 'runner/postal worker' called Paul and she said, "Well, I hope I can still see my little helper Paul" like she didn't want me there and so I said, "Don't worry, he's just sitting next door" (this was the manager's decision by the way to change the desks round temporarily). I'm extremely quiet and a hard worker, but I feel no one likes me here. I feel I'm not being treated as nicely as the others here are and I feel so tense all day long.

Thanks Denise B, but I've done all that and it's now my 3rd month here. I do appreciate all your replies.

oh poor you- i ve never been a temp but i do employ them so from the other side of things when they are floating round helping anyone and everyone i don't get much of a chance to speak to them or know how they are feeling. but if one of mine was as misarable as you sound i would like to know- sometimes its better to speak up and air your feelings- if i thought the problem was bad enough i would talk to my other staff. i feel for you and you have certainly given me a new perspective on temps maybe i'll make more of a effort when i get back to work. cheer up x

I doubt it is that they don't like you but everywhere you are sent you are like abrand new person and they already have their team with its own norms and ways. So it is like you have to fit into each team each time you are moved. This has to be a gradual thing. e.g. Do they have tea breaks where someone takes turns to make the tea? If so make sure you take a turn - actually volunteer the next time some one is making drinks by saying something like 'Isn't it about time I maade those?'. Ask eachperson in the team what they want and refer to them by name as you do it. A couple of days later make the first drink of the day; again refer to each person by name and check what they like to drink (if you cannot remember). If your current co worker refers to her 'Paul' again say 'You must miss him; never mind he will be back here before you know it'. Incidentally do this when you have been with a team for a couple of days not jumping straight in. I felt the same as you one and only did this to be polite but accidentally discovered that it helped me fit in to the group I was working with. Think of the plus side - if you get moved round the company you wiil gradually get known as that nice girl who works hard and they will look forward to when you come back. Oh and always smile when you come in in the morning and say hi everyone and when you leave at night wave and call out 'Bye everyone'. At the weekend dont't forget to say 'Hope you have a good weekend' or something similar.. give it a month and I'm sure you will find things have changed.

Hi Poopsy - I havent read your previous question but I will say that as a float secretary, youll have to get used to this attitude. Ive done a lot of temping over the last 9 years (Omg am I that old?!) and its always the same, as a temp, esp as a float, youll never be in an area long enough to make an impact so I say just keep your head down and remember, its only a job. As long as youre not being abused or victimised that is, if THATS happening then speak to HR. Chin up chicken!! :O) xx
