I've often wondered why it is called reality TV, when clearly there is nothing real about it. I'm not just talking about BB this includes all the other sh!t like jungle.

Surely programmes like dispatches and panorama are reality TV, seeing as they educate us about various different stories that happen across the world?

Reality means no script. Not real ? The idiots that appear can't be other than real, the best thing is they have nowhere to hide so their public persona falls apart.

However, I have to say I'm not watching / have not watched Celeb Big Brother, Im a Celeb or other rubbish - I prefer common folk like myself in my reality TV.

its called reality cuz theres no scripts and stuff...whether there be actors or not....sum amount of acting always goes into makin a reality show...thats frm the side of the participants....(:Pu'd get bored otherwise)
while those that educate are reality too but they r usually called documentaries....
surely u dun have that many ppl tune in to tv if bb were called a documentary....and it wont make any sense either....
reality tv is just another term given to shows that have no scripts and are made to entertain.....

Because these programs are supposedly bringing out peoples real colors. But I think that all ir is is acting out to make every second on tv count.

If this is not reality, then Jade is an angel in real life. Jade IS a typical example of reality TV - this is not an act she's putting on - this is, sadly, the REAL Jade.

Of course you are right and yet they are like a train wreck...you can't help but be drawn to them. I'm currently watching "American Idol". I usually stop watching as soon as they narrow down to 12...but I LOVE all the really strange people who show up for auditions....even if they are staging it for tv time. It's my dirty little secret. :D

Perhaps it is because the Tellie itself is real.
And you also are real.
And you are really wasting real time watching it.

As opposed to answering rhetorical questions at 4 in the morning to earn points that you never get to spend.
Which is, of course, not a waste of time.

Good point, I guess they coined the term and it stuck.
It started off with survivor which then spread rapidly becuase it cost so much less to produce.

Documentaries are real. Stuff like BB is a contrived bag of poo.

You have a point. Though it is the contestants' reality for the time they are there.
