I love my violin that I bought from Southwestern Strings. It is a Klaus Mueller Prelude Violin. My first violin was one that was bought used at a pawn shop. It wasn't any special brand, but served me well while I was learning to play. The important thing is that you get the right size for your arm length. Violins come in many different sizes. Go to a music store and get fitted to find out which size is best for you even if you go somewhere else to buy one.

You want to self-teach yourself a little violin and you think you can learn enough to sound like a recording artist? Sorry, it's not that easy. Violin is considerably harder than guitar and every self-taught violinist I've heard has been painfully awful. You're not going to get a decent violin for $200-300. That's low beginner level, but at least it's one step above 'violin-shaped piece of wood.' Don't expect to get anything that sounds good for that price. Many of the violinists you hear on Youtube have instruments worth well over $10,000 and degrees from conservatories. You can't buy a cheap beginner violin, mess around with it by yourself for a while, and expect to sound like them. In that price range look at Klaus Mueller or Franz Hoffman instruments. They won't sound great but at least they're sturdy and well-made.

Suzuki is pretty good for a beginner. Little expensive, but good quality. Go to your local music store and see what they say
