I'm reading a book called 'Take Back Your Life' that is about this. Did you know that in some European countries, people work an average of 13 weeks less than the average American? That's 1 year less in 4 years! I want to move! :-)

I think our overwork is a combination of things. One is rampant consumerism -- we keep shopping way past what we need. One is overinflated executive salaries -- the gap between CIO and average worker increased significantly in the 90s -- average pay raise during that time was about 10% for those at the bottom & about 500% for those at the top. So the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting broke. Those of us not in the 7-figures and up bracket are sometimes working 2 jobs to pay bills. This leads to less time with family, more kids with problems, less time to relax and enjoy life instead of just working ourselves to death. Another reason for overwork is fear -- many big corporations have been doing so many layoffs that the folks that are left are working a lot of unpaid overtime because they are afraid that if they don't, they will be laid off next -- and because upper management has unreasonable expectations of the amount of work one person can do.

In short -- yes, I agree with you. :-)
