ar eu talking about the housing rate?

Your best option is to share an appartment with some roommates as the cost would be divided.

Rates vary according to where in mumbai you're located. It may range from Rs. 25,000 per month to 5000 per month, but in the suburbs, a small appartment may be as low as 10,000 a month.

If you don't mind taking a bank loan and getting your own place you may end up paying the same amount pr month in EMIs and get ownership at the end of many years.

You should try for a place in andheri or powai or malad as the call centres r located in those areas.....you'd save travel time.

As for auto rates, they're fixed at Rs. 9 minimum and Rs. 1 increase every 10 meters.

In food rates,
Fruits and vegetables are expensive and fish is exorbitant.

Clothes are reasonable if you know where to shop

Hi Reeta,
Mumbai is quite expensive and is unfortunately a difficult place for an outsider to stay initially. However, after a month, you should get acclimatized with the place. My guess is most call center companies are nearby Andheri East and some of the northern and eastern suburbs. However, not all of mumbai is expensive. If you search hard, you might get a place for a reasonable price between andheri(east) and borivali (east). The eastern parts are cheaper.
Household items are slightly expensive than most cities i've been to.
The best place for mobiles and other gadgets. - Alfa, Vile parle
Best clothes and accessories - almost everywhere, esp colaba.
Best means for transportation for long distances - local trains
for short distances - BEST buses - the BEST website has a list of all buses and routes and u can search for buses between specific destinations.
The city is definitely safer than most other cities in India.
However, be very careful with whom to trust and whom not to trust.

Rates in figures
Estimated starting figures for Rent for a 2 bhk unfurnished
Andheri East - 10000
Jogeshwari east - 9000 (not too safe for girls at night !)
Goregaon east - 10000
Malad east - 9000
Kandivali east - 8000
Borivali east - 9000

A growth in disposable incomes, a combination of low interest loans and easily available bank financing, coupled with a high demand for commercial real estate has led to property prices increasing substantially, in some areas like the Bandra Kurla Complex, by as high as 60% in 2006. A heavy residential and commercial demand and a steady supply of state-of-the-art flats and properties in Mumbai has led to the rising land prices. Despite the rise, however, property sales in Mumbai have soared in recent years.
