I like giving people thumbs up/down better. Although it was up to our peers to rate our questions and answers I feel that only having the star leaves you to be rated by those who feel your question/answer is worthwhile.
Now that I think more on it...maybe I'd truly care if we were getting points for having a high number of stars or thumbs up.

I don't mind the stars. . .
think they were put in place to help with interactions, and people who want to socialize or just be known, and etc. . .
